About Third-Stream
The Third-Stream Music Education blog is about dragging music education into the Twenty First Century. Its aims to inspire and equip music educators to keep music classes relevant to modern society by using popular music and culture to teach art music while, simultaneously, teaching young people to make higher quality pop music by applying the artistry learned through ‘classical’ music. Third-Stream is generally about music education, usually about student performing ensembles, and specifically about bringing cutting-edge modernism to the high school wind ensemble rehearsal.
Third-Stream is written by Cary Stewart. Cary is the Director of Bands and Middle School Fine Arts Team Leader at a medium-sized American international school in Asia, where he directs the Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Concert Band and Rock Band Workshop, teaches Beginning Guitar and organizes faculty ensembles. He is a conductor, arranger and clinician for hire, and has performed and taught on four continents. In his “spare time” Cary writes jazz and chamber music, and plays freelance percussion. Cary’s main musical interests are jazz, Latin and world music styles, as well as 21st Century wind band repertoire. He holds Bachelor of Music and Master of Music Education degrees, as well as teaching certifications in K-12 Music Education and in Gifted & Talented Education. He maintains membership in Pi Kappa Lambda music honor society, Music Educators National Convention, Percussive Arts Society, the Jazz Education Network and the Texas Bandmasters Association.
